Training Title: Assessing, Understanding, and Integrating the Role of Culture into Care
Presenter: Willie Garrett, MS, LP, CEAP, Ed.D.
Training Description:
Dr. Willie Garrett, former President of the Minnesota Psychological Association, is a leader within the delivery of culturally competent care. Dr. Garrett has over 30 years of experience treating individuals and families in trauma recovery, grief management, depression, and anxiety treatment, and work adjustment consulting. In this training, Dr. Garrett will lead participants in exploring how cross-cultural communication and cultural adaptations can influence how people access care. Participants will increase skills and confidence for assessing and modifying their approach to maximize the delivery of culturally congruent care.
Training Objectives
- Learn to identify the narrow definitions valued in American culture and the harmful effects on helpers and clients.
- Learn the hidden cultural behaviors of BIPOC groups and how helpers interpret these behaviors. Including concepts of family, parenting, safety, externalizing behaviors, and non-verbal communication styles.
- Learn to Identify invisible racism, the intersectionality of oppression, and the adaptable behaviors of historically underserved groups.
- Based on knowledge of adaptive behaviors and communication styles, learn strategies for incorporating cultural considerations into assessments and treatment interventions, to aid in the delivery of culturally congruent care.
- Learn the different suicide methods and emotional behaviors of BIPOC groups.
